About / FATE Annual Policy Dialogue Series

The Annual Policy Dialogue Series on Entrepreneurship by FATE Foundation (FATE) is a high level stakeholder program that brings together entrepreneurship ecosystem stakeholders, policy makers and influencers in Nigeria to discuss and propose actionable solutions and policy recommendations aimed at improving the business environment in Nigeria while enabling the Start, Growth and Scale of Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (MSMEs).

Since 2015 when FATE Foundation expanded its focus to include Research and Policy Advocacy around key entrepreneurship thematic areas in Nigeria, we have utilized the Research – Policy Dialogue – Policy Advocacy approach to drive policy conversations for the review, design and implementation of entrepreneurship policies in Nigeria. To date, we have developed 4 Research Reports and hosted 4 Policy Dialogue programmes on:

  • The MSME Policy Environment (2015)
  • Mapping Study of the Nigerian Entrepreneurship Ecosystem (2016)
  • Entrepreneurship Ecosystem: Key Players in Nigeria (2017)
  • Nigerian MSME Financial Literacy Survey (2018)

The reports can be accessed at www.fatefoundation.org/research/.

This year, the focus of our Research and Policy Dialogue programme is on “From StartUps to Scale-Ups”. Over the last couple of years, there has been significant investment in StartUps with no clear available data on how they are scaling to date. While investing in StartUps is essential and critical, multiple studies have shown that Scale-Ups possess strong potential to significantly impact the economy in terms of GDP contribution, jobs and wealth creation.

To achieve this impact, there has to be deliberate and consistent holistic support for Scale-Ups. This will be the focus of the conversations at the 2019 Policy Dialogue Programme and the key agreements from the dialogue will inform our policy advocacy focus for the year.

Expected at this high-level stakeholder programme are 80-100 entrepreneurship policy stakeholders such as The Office of the Vice President (OVP), Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment (FMITI), Small and Medium Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), Nigerian Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (NASME), Development Organizations, Lagos state government, Ogun state government etc
